First Day
The first day was a semi success. We left Green Cove Springs at about 12:30pm in the morning only to get about 3 miles south when the port engine overheated and had to be shut down. Upon investigation we found that the alternator belt which turns the water pump alternator off the crankshaft was coming apart and as a result loosening and causing the belt slip and causing the engine to overheat. I called Ken to see if there was a spare belt on the boat and he gave me the likely locations but No spare belts could be found. I tighten the belt on the port engine and we continued only to have it loosened again and had to be shut down. We continued to limp along on one engine at only 3.2 knots for the balance of the day until we got to the Anchorage and Palatka Florida at 7:30pm. All in all, it was a good day. On Monday Ken will meet us here at the marina and we will repair the belts and continue to south.

Well captain, sounds like you are being 'broken in' to a bigger boat the good old fashioned way - 'hands on' - be sure to suggest such easy to buy spare belts be properly stocked... tells me there is no inventory checklist? What is allowing the belt "slipping"? Or is damage the cause? Is a lock washer missing? Details please.
ReplyDeleteSUGGESTION - upload high resolution pixs so when it is clicked in the blog it re-displays in a large easy to view format. We all hate 'tiny' pictures.
ReplyDeleteDay two? No blogging... guess that speaks volumes... all because of a v-belt? lol I cannot wait to hear the rest of the story.

Darn Norm, did the Admiral insist on a motel overnight? Maybe no v-belts in Dodge City? Had to walk a mile for a Camel... inquiring minds want to know what's up doctor? Darn, the suspense is killing me.... What say you?
ReplyDeleteStanding by in 'Paradise' - it is 83F so far today with overcast skies and gentle trade winds...
